Course Content
Basic Studio Engineering:
This module covers an introduction to the recording studio, basic digital editing, working with musicians, basic recording and mixdown techniques, understanding of the recording studio process and budgeting for the studio.
Business Overview:
This module covers the theory of running and establishing a successful music business, basic accounting, various management principles, financial analysis applied to real-life entertainment industry examples, artist and human resource management, social and communication skills necessary for success and understanding cash flow and the balance sheet. Industry perspectives: this module covers the structure, composition and interaction of the various elements of the music industry, students gain an understanding of the key players and relationships that drive the industry. Job hunting, CVs and employment opportunities are discussed.
Legal and Copyright:
This module covers the legal aspects of the music business including copyrights, contracts and accounting procedures, intellectual property, legal representation and associated issues are analyzed to ensure graduates are able to protect themselves, their careers and clients.
Music Industry Overview:
During this module, students will learn the history of the music industry, mistakes made in the past and the basic business structure of music business. Students will also further examine current challenges faced by all members of music business and how current and future trends and technology will change the face of this industry.
Marketing/publicity/promotion:
In this module, students will learn the traditional ways to promote and market music, create new ways to gain exposure for an artist or product and learn various techniques and promotions used to develop an artist.
New Media:
Students will learn all about music and media industries and how the various industries work together. Students are instructed on how to create web pages, promotional material, video/audio files and working with all types of media.
Understanding the Money Flow:
In this module students will learn how artists currently make money in the industry through music sales, publishing, live performances, licensing and merchandising. Students will further focus on current changes in the industry and how this will affect how artists and music business professionals make money in the future.

DETAILS
DIPLOMA ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- minimum age 18
- or mature age students over 21 years;
- or on receipt of suitable evidence, SAE shall seek to admit all prospective students (via special entry) who are considered to have a reasonable chance of success in the program. Please make appointment for an interview.
ASSESSMENT METHOD AND AWARD
Practical:
- throughout the course, students submit a number of prescribed projects;
- students undertake a substantial research project, within the guidelines set by the Institute;
- a final business plan presentation
Theoretical:
- theoretical progress examinations are held at regular intervals over the duration of the program;
- the preparation and submission of a written diploma assignment on a subject of student’s choice (subjects must be approved by the program co-ordinator);
- a final written theory examination.
Award:
- In order to qualify for the SAE Diploma, candidates need to reach an overall assessed mark of seventy five (75) percent (theory and practical).
